Working together for Sustainable Energy Future in Viet Nam

This is the theme of the 2nd High-level meeting (HLM) organized by the Viet Nam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG) on 26 November 2018 in Ha Noi.

The meeting was co-chaired by the Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Dang Hoang An, Mr. Bruno Angelet - Ambassador of the European Union to Viet Nam and Mr. Ousmane Dione – Country Director of the World Bank in Viet Nam.

The high-level meeting gathered more than 200 senior representatives, including Ambassadors and representatives from the public sector, development organizations, private companies and social organizations.

The highlight of this HLM is the presentation of policy recommendations conducted by VEPG’s Technical Working Groups (TWG) with the target of promoting the development of Vietnamese Energy Sector in five priority areas: Renewable energy, Energy efficiency, Energy Sector Restructure, Energy Access, Energy Data and Statistics. Each TWG presented and discussed on a number of specific policy recommendations collected from studies and dialogues among members of the Groups throughout 2018.

The Deputy Minister Dang Hoang An emphasized: “Today, we are pleased to note 40 important policy recommendations proposed by the TWGs from VEPG. We find these policy recommendations very appropriate and useful for discussing on developing policies for Viet Nam’s current Energy sector. I am therefore honored - on behalf of the Co-chairmen of VEPG, Ambassador Angelet and Mr. Dione - declare that we formally approve policy recommendations and commit to properly perform them, while ensuring the integration of these contents in policy making and planning for the development of the Sector in the coming time.”

Meeting attracted many local and foreign experts.

Ambassador Bruno Angelet said: “The European Union commits to support Viet Nam in shifting into clean energy while ensuring all people’s access to energy at a reasonable price and national competitiveness. We are very proud of the capacity of VEPG when they could offer recommendation for comprehensive policy reforms within a year. It is a result gained from the close consultation with the Government, private sector, research units as well as civil social organizations. We hope that these recommendations will be incorporated into Viet Nam’s strategic policy documents and be realized into specific actions.”

The World Bank also supports the energy development program of Viet Nam, including five priority areas discussed at this HLM. Mr. Ousmane Dione, Country Director of WB in Viet Nam said: The World Bank commits to help Viet Nam obtain sustainable, clean and reliable energy sources at affordable prices to all people, including technical consultancy and policy, direct investment assistance, assurances and measures of risk mitigation, policy reform support, energy security improvement, and help Viet Nam reach Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) as part of the Treaty of Paris.

Viet Nam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG):

- Established in June 2017;

- Targeting at effective use of international support for sustainable energy development in Viet Nam in line with national laws and international treaties to which Viet Nam is a contracting party.

- VEPG focuses on five priority areas: Renewable energy, Energy Efficiency, Energy Sector Restructure, Energy Access, Energy Data & Statistics;

- Through activities of TWGs, VEPG gives its comments and recommendations on policy developing and planning for the development of the Sector.
