EVN President and CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan meets with delegation from Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry

On the afternoon of January 22 in Hanoi, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan – President and CEO of Vietnam Electricity (EVN) – hosted a working session with a delegation from the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, led by Mr. Somchit Inthamith, Honorary Advisor to the Chamber and former Vice Minister of Industry and Commerce of Laos.

At the meeting, the Lao delegation shared insights on the development potential of wind and solar power projects in Laos, while expressing a strong desire to enhance electricity trade cooperation with Vietnam in light of the latter’s rising electricity demand in the coming years. The delegation affirmed that Laos is willing to collaborate with Vietnamese partners to study and implement renewable energy projects aimed at electricity export, thereby contributing to energy integration between the two countries.

In addition, the Lao side raised certain challenges related to transmission infrastructure and requested EVN to further elaborate on its strategic direction, technical requirements, and timelines for power intake, in order to enable investors to better prepare and plan their cooperation activities accordingly.

On behalf of EVN, President and CEO Nguyen Anh Tuan warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the visit. He affirmed that electricity import from Laos is a long-term strategic direction aligned with Vietnam’s National Power Development Plan and high-level bilateral cooperation agreements.

EVN’s leadership noted that Vietnam’s electricity demand is forecast to continue growing strongly in the coming years, creating significant opportunities to expand cross-border electricity trade. On that basis, EVN stands ready to cooperate with relevant Lao agencies and enterprises to exchange information and explore specific collaboration opportunities. At the same time, he emphasized the importance of ensuring transmission infrastructure readiness, project schedule compliance, and adherence to technical standards to guarantee safe and stable operation of the power systems in both countries.

The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to maintain regular exchanges and strengthen coordination moving forward.
