These three works, with a total investment of nearly VND 2,165 billion, were invested in by the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) and implemented by the Southern Power Project Management Board.

Specifically, the Phu Quoc - Bac Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line has a total investment of nearly VND 353 billion and comprises 2 × 20.7 km of double-circuit transmission line and 75 tower locations. The Phu Quoc - Nam Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line, energized on August 16, 2026, has a total investment of VND 934 billion and comprises 2 × 20 km of double-circuit transmission line and 79 tower locations, including a 2.7 km underground cable section. The Phu Quoc 220 kV Substation, energized on August 19, 2026, has a total investment of VND 877.6 billion and comprises two 250 MVA transformers and 2 × 19 km of double-circuit 220 kV transmission line for grid connection, including a 2.7 km underground cable section.

Completing these three works not only ensures a safe, reliable power supply to meet the robust growth demands of the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone but also upgrades energy infrastructure, preparing the region to host the 2027 APEC Summit.

Joining forces to tackle land clearance challenges

Before the completion of these three works, the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone relied on two independent 110kV power sources: the Phu Quoc 110kV substation (supplied via the Ha Tien – Phu Quoc 110kV underground cable) and the South Phu Quoc 110kV substation (supplied via the Kien Binh – Phu Quoc 220kV cross-sea transmission line). Consequently, if a fault occurs at one source, the ability to supply power to loads in the area will be affected.

To ensure the grid operates safely, continuously, and stably - thereby supporting Phu Quoc's growth and, crucially, guaranteeing an uninterrupted power supply for the 2027 APEC Summit - EVNSPC accelerated the implementation of three key works: the Phu Quoc 220kV substation, Phu Quoc – South Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line and Phu Quoc – North Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line, with a combined investment of nearly VND 2,165 billion.

Ready to ensure power supply for APEC 2027

The timely and early completion of all three projects was made possible by the close attention and decisive direction of the Government and authorities at all levels, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, An Giang Province, and Vietnam Electricity (EVN). In addition, the timely completion of the projects was made possible by the strong determination and efforts, as well as the close and well-coordinated cooperation between EVNSPC and relevant units, including the Southern Project Management Board (Ban AĐLMN), An Giang Power Company, Southern Power Testing Company, and the SCADA Operation Center, together with the construction contractors. The Southern Power System Dispatch Center also provided close support and coordination.

Contractor uses unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) to deploy pilot wire, reducing manual labor and helping accelerate construction progress.

During an inspection of construction and energization activities on August 17, Mr. Nguyen Tai Anh, EVN Vice President, acknowledged and commended the efforts made by EVNSPC and the participating units. Although the overall requirement was to complete the entire scope of work before September 2027, EVNSPC and its partners are striving to essentially finish the project components one year ahead of schedule. This, in turn, provides additional time to comprehensively inspect, monitor, and fine-tune the system, helping ensure safe and reliable power grid operation.

Once all three projects are put into operation, the total power supply capacity across the Special Zone will increase to 315MVA, with the potential to expand to 500MVA, establish a looped grid configuration, and meet the N-1 reliability criterion. This will also mark an important step forward in completing the power transmission grid in Phu Quoc. This will help drive socio-economic development in the Phu Quoc Special Zone, while ensuring readiness to provide a safe, stable, and reliable electricity supply for APEC 2027.
