Electricity leads way, catalyzing economic development in southern region

With the motto 'Electricity takes the lead,' the five-decade journey of construction and development by the Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) has also been a journey of ensuring power supply, laying the foundation and serving as a catalyst for the remarkable socio-economic growth of southern provinces and cities.

Powering industrial “take-off”

The Deputy Director of the Binh Duong Department of Industry and Trade emphasized that ensuring a stable power supply plays a vital role in the province's socio-economic development. It has helped Binh Duong attract investment from major corporations, particularly in high-tech, processing, and manufacturing industries. As a result, Binh Duong has become one of the four leading investment destinations in the country. In 2010, the province's commercial electricity output reached 5.28 billion kWh, and by 2024, it had risen to 16.7 billion kWh, ranking third nationwide, behind only Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi. The Binh Duong Department of Industry and Trade has expressed high appreciation for the power sector’s power quality, service professionalism, and customer service standards.

According to Mr. Bui Quoc Hoan, EVNSPC Vice President, industrial loads currently account for over 60% of the load structure of EVNSPC. To meet this substantial electricity demand, alongside investments in power generation and grid infrastructure, EVNSPC has continuously improved service quality, shortened the time required to access electricity, and applied new technologies to enhance power supply reliability. It is also moving toward fully digitizing all business processes, according to the general roadmap of Vietnam Electricity (EVN). These ongoing efforts have helped build trust among businesses in particular and electricity users in general across 21 southern provinces and cities.

Along with industrial development, the national power grid has also provided a foundation and driven the rapid growth of the tourism and services sector — the 'smokeless industry.' Thanks to a safe, high-quality, and continuous power supply, tourism on islands like Phu Quoc, Con Dao, and Hon Tre has truly 'taken off.'

Electricity brings life to land

Along with industrial development, over the past decade, the growth rate of commercial electricity in the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries sectors of EVNSPC has consistently reached double digits, with many years seeing increases of over 20%. Electricity has increasingly played a crucial role, contributing to the formation of commodity production areas. Examples of this significant contribution by EVNSPC include the flourishing dragon fruit orchards in Binh Thuan, high-tech agricultural farms in Lam Dong, and abundant harvests in the rice granaries of An Giang and Dong Thap.

To meet the electricity demand for dragon fruit lighting, EVNSPC and local Power Companies have invested in building numerous 110kV power lines and substations, while also expanding and reinforcing the 22kV power grid and increasing the capacity of distribution substations. From 2014 to 2016, EVNSPC supported the replacement of over 2 million light bulbs in the provinces of Binh Thuan, Tien Giang, and Long An, with a total support cost of over VND 17.5 billion. This initiative helped farmers save more than VND 82 billion in electricity costs annually. Additionally, the program contributed to raising awareness about environmental protection, as well as promoting energy-efficient, safe, and effective electricity use.

Since 2015, the demand for electricity for aquaculture has increased significantly. For example, from 2015 to 2017, the load capacity increased by an average of 9.55%, from 7,780MW in 2015 to 9,529MW in 2017, with an average growth rate of 10.8% in commercial electricity consumption. In response to this demand, EVNSPC has made efforts to balance and arrange substantial funding (own capital and loans) to invest in the construction and renovation of the electricity grid system in provinces with high shrimp farming density.

Along with efforts to invest and ensure electricity supply, EVNSPC is not only promoting energy-saving production models but also surveying and researching solutions to integrate solar panels with the motor system of shrimp farming fans. This contributes to meeting electricity supply needs for production, reducing production costs, and promoting the development of the shrimp farming industry in the region.

It can be affirmed that EVNSPC has always ensured that electricity “leads the way,” driving fundamental changes and providing strong momentum for the socio-economic development of the 21 provinces and cities in the southern region. This is also a highly commendable achievement of the generations of power industry workers in the South, who have contributed to the journey of building and developing over half a century, etc.
