Son La and Lai Chau Hydropower Plants: Power output increased by over 20% compared to the same period last year

The Son La and Lai Chau Hydropower Plants have operated safely and efficiently during the early months of this year. As of June 22, the Son La Hydropower Plant had generated 3,033 million kWh, reaching 125% compared to the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, the Lai Chau Hydropower Plant produced 877 million kWh, equivalent to 120% of the same period last year.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Dung, Deputy Director of Son La Hydropower Company, the unit managing both Son La and Lai Chau Hydropower Plants, stated that the most critical factor in plant operations is meteorological and hydrological conditions, particularly reservoir inflow. In the early months of this year, meteorological and hydrological conditions at both Son La and Lai Chau have been more favorable than in 2024.

In addition, both plants completed their repair and maintenance works in Q1, earlier than usual, allowing all 9 turbine units of the plants to operate safely and efficiently without incidents, resulting in more than a 20% increase in power output compared to that of the same period last year.

"Regarding the plan to fulfill future power supply tasks, the company will closely monitor meteorological and hydrological developments to promptly propose optimized water usage to relevant authorities and ensure flexible reservoir operations. Secondly, we will prepare backup spare parts and equipment in advance so that in the event of a failure, immediate replacement can be carried out, minimizing downtime and avoiding water resource wastage," Mr. Nguyen Tuan Dung added.

Statistics show that since their inauguration and commissioning, the combined total electricity output from the Son La and Lai Chau Hydropower Plants has reached 151,408 million kWh; of which, Son La Hydropower Plant has contributed 116,332 million kWh and Lai Chau 35,076 million kWh.
