On August 27, 2020, EVN's President and CEO - Mr. Tran Dinh Nhan chaired a meeting to review the plan to reduce power loss in the last months of 2020 across the whole EVN. The meeting was organized virtually with 5 Power Corporations and the National Power Transmission Corporation.
A decrease of 0.22% has been achieved in comparison with the same period in 2019
According to the Standing Committee of the Steering Committee for power loss reduction of EVN, in the first 7 months of 2020, the power loss rate was 6.4%, 0.1% lower than the target and 0.22% lower than the same period in 2019.
Both EVN and the Power Corporations have kept on giving precise directions to reduce the power loss rate. In particular, the Group has regularly examined and requested the National Load Dispatch Center and regional load dispatch centers to closely collaborate with power generation companies, power transmission and distribution organizations in the operation and maintenance of the power system to maintain safe and uninterrupted electricity supply and reduce power loss rate.
The meeting of the Steering Committee to reduce EVN's power loss rate in the morning of August 27, 2020
The National Load Dispatch Center, the National Power Transmission Corporation, and 5 Power Corporations have worked together to economically operate the power system, sustain the voltage level, prevent incidents and maintain the optimal operation mode.
In business activities, the Power Corporations have continued to manage and analyze power loss of substations and power lines, and work out appropriate measures to reduce power loss for each region. Regulations on periodic inspection, replacement of power meters, damaged or inappropriate TU and TI in terms of primary values have been strictly followed. These corporations have closely cooperated with local authorities, Departments of Industry and Trade and other relevant local agencies in inspecting and handling violations of electricity use and electricity bill collection.
In the investment in and construction of power grids, the Group has implemented construction and overhaul projects on schedule, carrying on the installation and operation of low loss transformers (Amophous transformers); further investing in the installation of compensation capacitors / reactors, switchgears to operate the transmission system efficiently and minimize the transmission of reactive power on the grid.
However, according to the Standing Committee of the Steering Committee for power loss reduction of EVN, in the first months of 2020, there still exist transmission lines and transformers on the transmission grid being frequently operated at over 80% of capacity and short-term overloaded. The power loss management and introduction of solutions to reduce power loss in transmission grid of EVNNPT and power transmission companies in recent years have been yet inactive, the analysis and development of power loss reduction plans has not been practically performed.
As for the distribution grid, there have been some substations and power lines being operated full-load; stretched medium and low voltage lines with lack of section break equipment, etc. In many areas, medium voltage power lines are long, timeworn, overloaded, without loop support, requiring widespread power supply interruption in every repair and maintenance activity.
There is still room for improvement
Mr. Ngo Son Hai – Vice President of EVN said that in reality there is still room for improving power loss, via management of power meters, implementation of construction investment projects to reduce overload and full load status of the power grid, via operation management and adjustment of voltages, etc.

According to Mr. Ngo Son Hai, the most difficult problem in power loss reduction between now and the end of the year and in the following years is that the 500 kV power grid stays in high condition of power transmission from the North to the Central and from the Central to the South. Therefore, EVNNPT should develop specific annual plans, taking consideration of the actual situation.
According to EVN's President and CEO Tran Dinh Nhan, over the past 5 years, the Group has reduced power loss rate from 7.94% (in 2015) to 6.49% (in 2019). It is targeted that in the next 5 years (i.e. by 2025), the power loss rate will be as low as 6%. The Group's leader requested 5 Power Corporations to come up with solutions to achieve this target. Particularly, EVNNPT needs to analyze the power transmission flow to formulate their annual operation plans and power loss targets, because power loss on the transmission grid is mainly technical loss.
In addition, the Power Corporations strive to reach a power loss rate even lower than EVN’s target by solutions suitable to characteristics of each corporation. “The leader of a power corporation must always ask why power loss in his corporation is higher than the others? How to bring the power loss rate down to the level of the best member unit in the Group?” emphasized EVN’s President and CEO Tran Dinh Nhan.
