Promoting and expanding cooperation between EVN and JERA Japan in green energy development

On March 7, in Hanoi, EVN’s Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh had a meeting with Mr. Izumi Kai - CEO and Director of Business Strategy Department of JERA Inc., Co (JERA) on cooperation areas in the future.

At the meeting, Mr. Izumi Kai - CEO and Director of JERA Business Strategy Department respectfully thanked and appreciated the good cooperative relationship between Vietnam Electricity and JERA Inc. Company, Co. Japan in recent times.

Previously, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation towards the goal of decarbonization in October 2023. EVN and JERA will coordinate to develop an action plan to implement specific cooperation activities, including building a decarbonization roadmap in coal-fired power plants; building an overall decarbonization roadmap for EVN; studying and applying decarbonization technology, ammonia, and hydrogen co-firing technology to EVN's existing coal-fired power plants, etc.

Mr. Izumi Kai shared that JERA is currently researching and implementing solutions to use green energy sources to replace coal at thermal power plants, aiming at the energy transition goal. JERA wishes to expand cooperation with EVN in implementing copper combustion technology in EVN's existing coal-fired power plants in the near future.

The leader of EVN stated that at COP26, Vietnam was committed to a carbon-neutral roadmap by 2050. This goal poses enormous challenges for Vietnam's energy industry, especially the electricity sector. Therefore, EVN wishes to gain experience in operating and remedying incidents at JERA's power plants.

EVN’s Vice President Nguyen Tai Anh also expressed his wish that JERA continue to support the sustainable development of Vietnam's electricity sector in the new context while promoting the long-term cooperative relationship between the two sides.
