Promoting renewable energy development in Son La province

On July 24, a specialized Supervision Delegation of the National Assembly Standing Committee worked with the authorities of Son La province on the execution of policies and laws regarding energy development in the 2016 - 2021 period.

Secured power supply

According to the report of Son La Provincial People's Committee, in the period 2016 - 2021, the power sector supplied about 3,412 million kWh in the province, securing power supply for the local socio-economic development and people's daily life; at the same time, made a great contribution to ensuring regional and national energy security.

Up to now, 204/204 communes, wards, and townships in the province have been electrified by the national power grid.

In terms of economical and efficient use of energy, in the 2016-2021 period, the province saved nearly 55 million kWh, reaching 2% of the total power sales.

Assessing the energy supply capacity to meet the province's development needs in the 2021-2025 period, Son La Provincial People's Committee stated that the province's power supply is much larger than the demand, sufficient to meet the province's socio-economic development needs until 2025.

Reporting at the meeting on the situation of power supply and investment in power projects in the province, EVN’s Vice President Pham Hong Phuong said that Son La has great hydropower potential. Up to now, the total capacity of hydropower plants in the province is nearly 3,700MW, making a great contribution to the added value of the whole industry sector of Son La province. In which, EVN’s hydropower plants are Son La Hydropower Plant with a capacity of 2,400MW and Huoi Quang Hydropower Plant with a capacity of 520MW. From 2016 to 2022, EVN's hydropower plants contributed to the budget of Son La province a total of over VND 11,000 billion.

Many breakthroughs

Mr. Bui Van Cuong - Secretary General of the National Assembly, Chairman of the Office of the National Assembly, and Deputy Head of the Supervision Delegation, viewed that in the period 2016-2021, Son La province achieved many breakthroughs and outstanding development, seriously followed policies and laws on energy development.

In particular, the Secretary General of the National Assembly, Chairman of the Office of the National Assembly Bui Van Cuong emphasized that the electrification of 100% of communes and wards is a great and noticeable effort. Besides, Son La is one of the provinces with a well-developed power grid and power generation system. At the same time, he suggested that Son La province should continue to promote the advantages of renewable energy, especially hydropower; enhance human resource development, science and technology application, and international cooperation; further focus on electrical safety and dam safety; well-performing the compensation, land acquisition, resettlement and taking good care of affected households in energy project areas, etc.
