The project is of significant importance in meeting growing electricity demand and establishing an energy infrastructure foundation to support the development of tourism, services, urban areas, and socio-economic activities in the special zone. In particular, it is one of the key energy infrastructure projects helping prepare the necessary conditions for Phu Quoc to host large-scale international events, including the APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in 2027.
The Phu Quoc 220kV Substation has a total investment of more than VND 877 billion. The project comprises two 250MVA transformers and a 17.9km double-circuit 220kV connection line. The substation has been developed as a modern and integrated facility, meeting national and international technical standards for reliability, operational safety, and urban aesthetics. It is also a key project for converting the Kien Binh - Phu Quoc transmission line to 220kV operation, increasing its power supply capacity to 500MVA. Construction commenced in December 2025, and the project was completed ahead of schedule.
The completion of the Phu Quoc 220kV Substation marks an important step forward in completing Phu Quoc's transmission grid, helping enhance power supply capacity, improve reliability, and ensure safe electricity supply for the area.
On the same day, the relevant units also conducted acceptance testing and trial energization of the 220kV transmission line from Kien Binh Substation Bay 275 to Phu Quoc Substation Bay 271, part of the Kien Binh - Phu Quoc 220kV Transmission Line project.
The Kien Binh - Phu Quoc 220kV Transmission Line was energized in 2022 but has been operating at the 110kV voltage level. The energization of the Phu Quoc 220kV Substation and the 220kV line connecting Kien Binh Bay 275 and Phu Quoc Bay 271 will enable the Kien Binh–Phu Quoc Transmission Line to be converted to 220kV operation. This will not only increase power supply capacity for Phu Quoc Special Zone but also mark a significant step in completing the island's transmission grid, improving supply capacity and reliability while ensuring safe electricity supply for the area.
Previously, the Phu Quoc–South Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line was energized and put into operation at 2:00 a.m. on August 16, 2026. During August 2026, EVNSPC will continue with the energization of the remaining project, the Phu Quoc–North Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line.
Once all three projects—the Phu Quoc 220kV Substation, the Phu Quoc–South Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line, and the Phu Quoc–North Phu Quoc 110kV Transmission Line—are put into operation, the total power supply capacity across Phu Quoc Special Zone will increase to 315MVA. The projects will also create a ring-connected network meeting the N-1 reliability criterion, providing fresh momentum for the special zone's socio-economic development and ensuring a safe, stable, and reliable electricity supply for APEC 2027.
