The commissioning of the two circuits of the Chon Thanh – Ben Cat 220kV transmission line will strengthen the interconnection between the 500kV and 220kV power grids, enhance transmission capacity, and ensure electricity supply for Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province, and surrounding areas.

On the night of August 15, 2026, the Central Power Projects Management Board (CPMB) and the Southern Power Projects Management Board (SPMB), under the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), coordinated with the Southern Regional Load Dispatch Centre (SSO), Power Transmission Company No. 4 (PTC4), and relevant units to complete the energization and loading of the two circuits of the Chon Thanh – Ben Cat 220kV transmission line.

The two circuits put into operation are the 279 Chon Thanh – 275 Ben Cat 2 220kV circuit and the 280 Chon Thanh – 276 Ben Cat 2220kV circuit. This interconnection was formed from facilities under the management of CPMB and SPMB, requiring close coordination between the two project management boards throughout construction, acceptance testing, and energization.

110 - 220kV combined transmission line and towers under Chon Thanh - Ben Cat 220kV Transmission Line Project

The scope managed by CPMB is part of the Chon Thanh – Ben Cat 220kV Transmission Line Project and includes a 14.91km double-circuit transmission line section from the Ben Cat 2 220kV Substation to tower position 220, as well as the connection section on the Chon Thanh 500kV Substation side.

The scope managed by SPMB is part of the Duc Hoa – Chon Thanh 500kV Transmission Line Project and includes an approximately 13.3km combined 220kV/500kV transmission line section from tower position 220 to position 256, together with the 220kV conductor stringing section from position 256 to position 01 at the Chon Thanh 500kV Substation. This scope comprises 37 foundation and tower positions and has been accepted as meeting technical and operational requirements.

The synchronized completion of the project components has established a two-circuit transmission link between the Chon Thanh 500kV Substation and the Ben Cat 2 220kV Substation.

Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Province, and surrounding areas are home to numerous industrial parks, urban areas, and important electricity loads. Therefore, putting the facility into operation at a time of high electricity demand will strengthen the connection between the Chon Thanh 500kV node and the Ben Cat 2 220kV grid, enhancing power transmission capability and operational flexibility of the power system.

The facility will also help maximize the effectiveness of existing grid assets, strengthen interconnections between the 500kV and 220kV voltage levels, and thereby improve the reliability of electricity supply for production, business activities, and people's daily lives.

Immediately after energization, both circuits carried load stably. At the time of recording, the voltage on each circuit was approximately 229.9kV; the currents were approximately 501 A and 516 A, respectively; and the corresponding transmission power was approximately 197.6MW and 202MW. The total transmission power on the two circuits reached approximately 400MW.
