Urgently supplying power to customers after Phu Quoc underground cable incident

16:49, 02/12/2025

As of the morning of December 2, 100% of customers living in the Phu Quoc special economic zone have been re-supplied with power after the  Ha Tien - Phu Quoc 110kV underground cable incident, including about 7,500 customers in the North Phu Quoc area receiving alternating power supply.

An Giang Power Company (An Giang PC) said that currently, Phu Quoc special economic zone is supplied with power from two sources: 110kV line, 173 Ha Tien - 172 Phu Quoc (with Ha Tien - Phu Quoc 110kV underground cable section) supplying power to the  Phu Quoc 110kV substation and  Kien Binh - Phu Quoc 220kV line is operating at 110kV voltage to supply power to the 110kV South Phu Quoc substation. These two sources have not been connected in a loop, so when the underground cable incident occurred, the power supply was affected.

As soon as the incident occurred, An Giang PC distributed the power supply from the 110kV Nam Phu Quoc substation to the 22kV medium voltage grid; mobilized large customers with self-operated generators to use the remaining capacity to serve the daily activities of customers, etc.

The Southern Power Corporation (EVNSPC) has also mobilized all mobile generators of member power companies to transport to Phu Quoc to increase the power supply. The total number of generators mobilized to date has reached 20, with a generating capacity of about 2.5MW. These will be ready to supply power alternately to public transformer stations far from the source to improve the voltage rate.

Up to now, all domestic and residential customers have been supplied with power, of which about 7,500 customers in the North Phu Quoc area have been supplied with electricity alternately.

In parallel with coordinating with relevant units to handle underground cable incidents, in order to supply stable power to customers, EVNSPC also directed An Giang PC to urgently coordinate with relevant departments, branches and sectors to deploy the temporary construction of an overhead 110kV line, with about 5 pillars (counting from the existing underground cable connection pillar to the shore) to the incident location. Currently, materials, machinery, and equipment have been gathered at the scene, and the construction force is urgently deploying the construction of this temporary overhead line.

An Giang PC workers urgently build power pole on 110kV overhead line from existing underground cable connection pole to incident location.

At 1:15 p.m. on November 29, 2025, an incident occurred on the 173 Ha Tien - 172 Phu Quoc 110kV line, causing a power outage at the Phu Quoc 110kV substation, affecting the power supply to the Phu Quoc special economic zone. According to initial records, Thuan Thanh KG Construction Design Consulting Co., Ltd. was constructing a platform in the safety corridor of the  Ha Tien - Phu Quoc 110kV underground cable line on the Ha Tien coast. The steel pile driving of the platform was detected to be the cause of the incident in the 110kV underground cable section supplying power to the Phu Quoc special economic zone.
