The North is entering the peak of the 2025 hot season with immense pressure on electricity demand. In response to this challenge, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has implemented a comprehensive range of solutions, including actively promoting and encouraging customers to install and use rooftop solar power.

Spreading the self-produced, self-consumed solar power model

Following the direction of the Northern Power Corporation, Thanh Hoa Power Company (Thanh Hoa PC) has actively implemented solutions to ensure a stable and safe power supply during the 2025 hot season. Notably, the company has encouraged electricity saving and the development of rooftop solar power systems, especially in high-consumption areas such as factories, hotels, restaurants, and industrial zones.

Currently, Thanh Hoa Province has 613 customers who have installed rooftop solar power systems, with a total capacity of 66MWp, of which more than 500 are individuals or households. Although the legal framework and effectiveness of the rooftop solar power model have already been established, its widespread adoption still faces some challenges. Many customers are not fully aware of the installation process or the technical requirements for rooftop solar systems; others lack access to updated policy information, leading to hesitation in making investment decisions.

In 2025, Thanh Hoa PC has proactively developed various scenarios to carry out promotional campaigns and expand the rooftop solar power model to households, agencies, organizations, and businesses. The goal is to increase the province's total installed capacity by approximately 33MWp, raising the total to around 99MWp.

Self-produced, self-consumed solar power helps customers save on costs.

Alongside this, Thanh Hoa PC has focused on enhancing the capacity of the power infrastructure. From 2024 to April 2025, the company completed and put into operation 7 new 110kV substations, increasing the total number of substations in the province to 31, with a total capacity reaching 2,237MVA — an increase of 457MVA compared to the same period last year. This marks a significant step forward in ensuring a stable power supply for rapidly developing industrial and residential areas.

Notably, digital technology has been widely applied in operational management. As of mid-March 2025, 26 out of 31 110kV substations had been converted to an unmanned operation mode, controlled remotely by the Remote Control Center. The centralized control not only improves reliability and reduces manpower needs but also contributes to optimizing dispatching and enhancing flexibility in responding to arising situations.

Implementing synchronized solutions

Data from EVNNPC shows that in recent years, electricity consumption during the summer peak has consistently grown by 10–15% compared to the multi-year average. In response to the intense heat and the continued strong increase in electricity demand, the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) has implemented a series of coordinated solutions.

EVNNPC’s power sales in Q1/2025 reached 22.889 billion kWh, up 5.95% compared to the same period in 2024, achieving 21.02% of the annual plan. Several provinces recorded high growth rates in sales, notably Ninh Binh (13.77%), Ha Tinh (12.58%), Hung Yen (12.45%), Ha Nam (12.32%), Thanh Hoa (11.33%), and Nghe An (11.03%).

To strengthen power supply capacity, from 2021 to 2025, EVNNPC has modernized the power grid with a total investment cost reaching hundreds of trillions of VND, especially in key industrial zones and clusters. The corporation has also proactively developed power supply scenarios, including contingency plans for extreme situations; closely coordinating with the National Power System and Electricity Market Operation Company (NSMO) to optimize operation methods. In addition, the grid work schedule has been scientifically arranged by the 27 power companies under EVNNPC, prioritizing the completion of maintenance tasks before the peak season.

Thanh Hoa PC advises businesses in Tay Bac Ga Industrial Park (Thanh Hoa City) to participate in voluntary Demand Response (DR) program.

In the long term, encouraging the installation of rooftop solar power, especially in high-load areas such as Thanh Hoa, Quang Ninh, Bac Giang, Ha Nam, and others, has been actively promoted by EVNNPC. This is not only a solution to supplement onsite power sources and reduce pressure on the power grid, but also contributes to advancing the goals of sustainable energy development and greening the electricity sector.
