On August 13th in Hanoi, the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) and the Northern Power Corporation (EVNNPC) held a conference to coordinate investment and construction of power grid projects. Mr. Hoang Xuan Khoi, Acting General Director of EVNNPT, and Mr. Nguyen Duc Thien, General Director of EVNNPC, co-chaired the conference.
According to assessments at the conference, power demand in the North continues to increase rapidly. During hot days, peak power in the North reached nearly 30,000MW, with EVNNPC's peak power (excluding Hanoi) reaching 21,142MW. Several areas with high load concentrations, such as Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Phu Tho, are at risk of experiencing full load or localized overload. In Bac Ninh province alone, the peak power demand is equivalent to the total installed capacity of all 220kV transformers in the area, resulting in very low power reserve capacity.
Faced with load pressure, the two corporations agreed to prioritize the progress of important projects to increase power supply capacity and ensure synchronization between the transmission and distribution grids. Specifically, in Bac Ninh, EVNNPT plans to complete the Bac Ninh 500kV Substation in Q2/2027; the Yen Dung 220kV Substation and the Bac Ninh 5 220kV Substation in April 2027.
The expected progress of some projects in other localities is as follows: An Lao 220kV Substation (Hai Phong), Sam Son 220kV Substation (Thanh Hoa) to be completed in Q4/2026; Hai Hau 220kV Substation (Ninh Binh) and connecting power lines in Q3/2026; Dien Bien 220kV Substation in Q4/2026; Nam Hoa 220kV Substation (Quang Ninh) in Q2/ 2027, and so on.

Mr. Hoang Xuan Khoi – Acting General Director of EVNNPT, delivering speech.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Thien – General Director of EVNNPC, delivering speech.
The two corporations also agreed to expedite the addition and upgrading of transformer capacity at several operating 220kV substations, while coordinating the handling of projects still facing procedural and planning obstacles. The installation of the third transformer at the Hung Dong, Nghi Son Economic Zone, Ba Thien, Bac Ninh 2, and Bac Ninh 3 substations was identified as a priority task to increase power supply capacity and meet load demand during the hot season of 2027.
